Maybe They've Got It All Wrong.
You don't have to grunt or yell to workout, but if you don't even feel the slightest inclination to do so while resistance training, for example, then you likely are not working hard enough to reach whatever goal you have.
Exercise is not necessarily supposed to be comfortable, soothing, and relaxing. Therapeutic arguably so, and maybe that difference is merely semantics at that point, but basically if you need to lose 87.6 lbs by next year and you're comfy while exercising, then you're going to be disappointed with you lack of results month after month. Just because you see or hear someone who could be described as fit getting after it doesn't mean they aren't in pain or struggling like a newcomer might be.
There is no magical elixir that longtime gym-goers imbibe to make them immune to the grind that is exercise. Moreover, they ALL - every single one of them - started exactly where everyone else starts. As a beginner with no clue how to exercise "properly," and how to look normal while doing it.
Newcomers should try their darnedest to keep that in mind, because they are no different than any other patron, they are just at a different stage of their fitness journey. Truly, beginners should seek out the guidance of "experienced members," because it will help them to make sure they are exercising safely and effectively.
Obviously, this seems very counter-intuitive to the atmosphere that is represented across the media that generally describes advanced lifters and some gyms as unapproachable, unhelpful, and intimidating. However, I think most would be surprised at the sense of community and welcoming, helpful environment that most gyms have regardless of a person's weight, height, experience, etc.
Most lifters who know what they are doing are more than happy to help someone who doesn't know all the ins-and-outs of the gym, how to properly perform a certain exercise, or has basic questions about dieting and programming. After all, they were once in those same shoes, just trying to figure it out and not step on anyone's toes.

Here's an Idea. Just Do You.
For those who worry about looking the fool because they are new to the gym scene, the whole point is to be there TO GET fit and build confidence. Anyway, those fears are mostly unfounded, because if you think about it, the judgment is coming from you and not other people in the vicinity.
People are normally too engrossed in their own routine to notice and, furthermore, spend time critiquing and subsequently pointing out how an exercise could have been done better. Who's to say they even know what they are doing anyway? If you are irrationally concerned with how you might be incorrectly doing something, the trainers and other gym staff are always very accommodating with that sort of thing.
Most gyms also offer a complimentary introductory session where you get to work with a personal trainer, which you can use as a walking text book if it suits you.
The point is, gyms aren't half as bad as they are made out to be to newcomers. Oftentimes, it is a welcome surprise to find just how liberating the gym can be for those who were unsure, but mustered the confidence to give it a whirl.
Something here has to have resonated with you. Make sure you never miss out on the gettin' the goods.
